Birim Makina: Dual-Robot Gantry Welding System on a 24-Metre Slider

01 · Problem

The customer's starting point

The bodies of scrap metal processing machines are thick-sectioned, very large and complex in weld geometry; standard cells were not enough for parts of this size.

Teaching parts at that scale point by point took many hours, and production stood still throughout.

On long constructions, more than one robot had to work along the same track without collisions, both to limit distortion and to cut cycle time.
02 · Solution

The system Robentex built

Birim Makina has been building scrap metal processing machinery since 1988. The bodies of those machines are among the hardest welding parts in heavy industry: thick-sectioned, very large and complex in weld geometry. A standard robot cell simply cannot take parts of this size into its working envelope.

Robentex worked with FANUC Europe in two stages. After the results of the first robotic system, commissioned in 2024, the second system went live in the first month of 2025: two FANUC robots in a 9-axis configuration on a single 24-metre floor slider. The two robots work simultaneously on separate regions of a long construction along the same track, without colliding.

The other half of the system is software. Both robots are programmed offline in a 3D environment from a single computer using AutoCAM Moses. While the robots weld the current part on the floor, the engineer prepares the weld route for the next one at a desk; programming time is no longer downtime.

According to the customer, the result is an improvement of up to 80% in programming time and up to 50% in production time. Running two robots at once along a long construction also keeps thermal distortion from concentrating in one area.

01 · The part

The bodies of scrap metal processing machines are thick-sectioned, very large and complex in weld geometry. They are no longer welded as one-off jobs but inside a series production flow, and running two robots at once keeps thermal distortion from concentrating in one area.

02 · Programming
